"Sat in front of the kiln in a silent mountain for three days and
nights, tending a fire. If I relax my attention, huge works sometimes burst
in the climbing kiln.", said Mr. Funasaki when he talked about the
training under the 12th "Miwa Kyusetsu", whose father was designated
a Living National Treasure in Japan. "The master didn't teach me anything
about technical things, but I learned a lot about attitude and passion
toward one's work. |

| Mr. Funasaki try to use natural materials to a maximum extent, for example, he make all glaze he use with a tremendous efforts, and it brings spontaneous harmony to his works. As for straw ashes, he purchases shook of straws from neighboring farmer, burn it in a rice paddy, put out fire by water, putting out by water make ashes contain more carbon than the natural extinction, then dry the remaining straw, put fire, put out fire by water again, repeat this process until required volume of ashes are made. Put sifted ashes in the water, let stand for one year until all ashes are precipitated and refined, blend it with other ashes. Making repeated experiments, it require another one year to develope the perfect white. |

This is his recent representative work, which requires 2months for completion
and proficient skills.
Since carving is done by free hand, not using pattern, failure won't be
tolerated, because it can not be repaired. |
